Emily Jagoda

I’m a San Francisco Bay Area based artist and an architect by trade. My work is heavily influenced by the surrounding landscape of my home nestled in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains. My background in architecture shapes the composition, layout, and framing choices of my work.

Painting offers me an immediate satisfaction that is generally unavailable in architecture. In painting, I can take the medium’s material limitations and explore them right away, building on each discovery as a series. Painting allows the freedom to bend the rules or ignore them.

A painting also demands a slowing of our attention. Some of my work moves into abstraction through a de-focused vision: less concerned with the perfect rendition of a detail, more open to the mood or feeling of a place, or describing the relative temperature of afternoon light when the undersides of leaves are glowing warm.
